EASTERN EUROPEAN CAMP is for children who will be entering Kindergarten through
6th grade in the fall. In the past our camp has included children from Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia Republic, Kazakhstan,
Romania, Russia , Ukraine and siblings, but campers from all Eastern European countries and former Soviet republics and
their siblings are welcome.
Eastern European
Camp 2007: We were pleased that 48 campers from Russia, Belarus and
Romania plus siblings made the trek to
EE Camp this year. Among many other activities, here are some of each class's highlights for the week: The K/1st class
enjoyed learning things about Everyday Life in EE like proper etiquette, a typical school day, the importance of
farming, dachas (Russian summer houses) and EE weddings. The 2nd graders celebrated EE style all week with Christmas
(where they caroled Romanian-style to other EE classes), Easter (where they made paskha, a cheesecake-like Easter dessert, to
sample) and birthday celebrations (where they learned how to play Karavai, a Russian birthday song-game). The combined
3rd/4th grade class worked on Life Books, made "Thunder Cake" with the help of Patricia Polacco's book and learned about life
in EE with the help of several special guests including one who taught them the art of pysanky (Ukrainian egg decoration).
The 4th grade class practiced and gave a stellar performance of the play, "Peter and the Wolf" for all the EE classes, ate
authentic Russian ice cream, learned a Romanian dance and made blinchiki (similar to crepes, filled with sour cream and preserves)
along with the 5th/6h graders. 5th/6th grade EE campers learned about the Trans-Siberian railroad, took a
field trip to a local Orthodox church and made their own model of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. All of the campers seemed to enjoy coming together with new friends
and old and playing a game of chess or picking out a tune on one of the Belarussian music makers. Many
thanks to all the creative and organized teachers and assistants who worked so hard to make EE Camp 2007 special!
